Indonesia relaxed its document legalization procedure

On the 4th of June 2022, the Regulation of Minister of Law and Human Rights No. 6 of 2022 entered into force in the Republic of Indonesia, implementing the enforcement of the Hague Convention Abolishing the Requirement of Legalization for Foreign Public Documents, and thus simplifying the cross-border use of public documents.

As of that date, diplomatic authentication or consular legalization of documents is no longer required. Instead, it is sufficient to have the documents attested by an apostille certificate with an “Apostille” stamp on them issued by the foreign competent authorities in order to be valid in Indonesia. Before that, the legalization process was quite lengthy and costly since any document intended to be used in Indonesia but signed outside of its territory had to be legalized by the local Indonesian Embassy.

The competent authority for issuing Apostille for documents signed in Indonesia to be used in other contracting states is the Ministry of Law and Human Rights.
