Canada joins the Apostille Convention

On the 11th of January 2024, the Hague Convention of 5 October 1961 Abolishing the Requirement of Legalisation for Foreign Public Documents (known as the Apostille Convention) came into force in Canada.

The Apostille Convention simplifies cross-border use of public documents and provides a single certification by a Competent Authority where the documents was executed – known as an Apostille.

The Canadian authorities will now be able to issue an Apostille, meaning public documents will no longer require legalization.

As a two-way basis, Canadian authorities will also accept apostilles of foreign public documents issued by other member countries.
