China accedes to the Apostille Convention
On the 7th of November 2023, the Hague Convention of 5 October 1961 Abolishing the Requirement of legalization for Foreign Public Documents (known as the Apostille Convention) will come into effect in China.
The accession of China to the Apostille Convention will simplify cross-border use of public documents, since it abolishes traditional legalization process that involves authentication by different authorities, and replaces it with a single formality – an Apostille.
It should be highlighted that the Apostille Convention applies to public documents but the Chinese government is yet to determine which documents will be deemed as public documents.
More information is expected to be made public shortly.
